National Emergency Alert Test

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will conduct a nationwide test on the backup date of October 3 (10/3) because of response efforts to Hurricane Florence. During this time, wireless emergency alerts (WEA) compatible cell phones will receive a test message. This is not a Buckeye Alert, but many students, faculty and staff will receive the test message.

Buckeye Alerts Now Available Through ALERT Franklin County for non-OSU affiliates

The Ohio State University and Franklin County Emergency Management and Homeland Security have partnered to make Buckeye Alerts more commonly available to the general public. Previously, signing up for Buckeye Alerts was limited mostly to students, faculty and staff of the university. Now community members can elect to receive the alerts via the ALERT Franklin County system, a county-wide mass notification and warning system for residents of Franklin County.

Police Make Arrest in Kidnapping and Rape Investigation

The Ohio State University Police Division has a suspect in custody in relation to the June 23 incident that led to a Public Safety Notice.

David W. Canter was arrested and charged with kidnapping and rape. The Ohio State University Police Division would like to thank the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Columbus Division of Police for assisting in the timely identification and apprehension of Mr. Canter.

The safety of our campus community remains our top priority, and anyone with information related to the case is encouraged to call OSUPD at 614-292-2121.

Craig Stone Appointed Chief of The Ohio State University Police Division

Craig Stone is the newest chief of The Ohio State University Police Division.

Stone’s appointment comes a little more than one year after he was initially hired to serve as the university’s deputy chief. Stone later served as acting police chief following the retirement of Paul Denton in June 2015.

“I have learned a lot in my first year as a Buckeye,” Stone said. “My No. 1 priority continues to be the safety of our campus community and I look forward to continuing the meaningful partnerships our police division has with Ohio State’s students, faculty and staff.”

Public Safety Director Baisden Retiring April 15

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Vernon Baisden, The Ohio State University Department of Public Safety Director and Assistant Vice President, will retire April 15, 2016, capping off a 15-year career at Ohio State.

“Ohio State has a very dedicated and professional police, security and emergency management staff,” Baisden said. “Our team works tirelessly every day to enhance the safety of the campus community, and I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to work alongside them for the last 15-plus years.”
