Campus Community Asked to Share the Road

With the start of a new academic year underway, The Ohio State University is encouraging the university community to pay attention and travel safely.

Whether you drive, walk, bike or ride a scooter to class or work, do it safely. Students, faculty, staff and visitors share the road and the responsibility.

Commuters are asked to look out for fellow Buckeyes and avoid distractions. Remove earbuds and look up from your phone. Be mindful around construction zones and obey signage.

In the News: Ohio State Preparing Security Measures

WBNS-TV spoke with Ohio State's Department of Public Safety ahead of Saturday's top-5 showdown between Ohio State and Notre Dame.

According to the news outlet, crews are preparing to keep fans safe during the game.

“Game days are busy days, but you get to see 100,000 plus people come and enjoy a football game. We do everything we can to make it as safe as possible,” said Ohio State's Director of Emergency Management, Robert Armstrong.

The university partners with local, state and federal agencies to host a safe game day experience.

In the News: Best Routes for Game Day

WBNS-TV previewed how fans should come and go from Ohio Stadium ahead of this weekend's big football game against Notre Dame. According to the news outlet, the university advises Buckeye fans and visitors to arrive early, plan for delays, and know their desired parking lot or travel route ahead of time.

Inbound and outbound traffic maps are available online. West campus bus shuttles are available and will drop off and pick up near Plumb Hall along Woody Hayes Drive.

In the News: OSUPD Expands Joint Patrols with CPD

As reported by WBNS-TV, The Ohio State University Police Division (OSUPD) has expanded its joint patrol program in partnership with the Columbus Division of Police (CPD).

“We want to work together. How can we share those resources and how can we become more effective? The concept was to put a team of officers together so they can work together in off-campus student neighborhoods so we can bring the resources of both agencies together on a daily basis,” Whiteside told WBNS.

Lyft Ride Smart at Ohio State

Lyft Ride Smart at Ohio State offers eligible students discounted rides from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. inside the university-designated service area. For those new to the program, Ohio State will contribute $6.50, per ride, and the remainder will be paid by the rider. Prices may be impacted by distance, traffic, time of day, special events and prime time surcharges.

Community Crime Map

Since launching the Community Crime Map in Spring 2022, The Ohio State University has continued to refine the customized crime reporting tool. 

New this fall, the map is pre-programmed to show reports from the most recent 7-day period – rather than 30 days – for crimes occurring within a one-mile radius. The preset map now also shows more crime categories – including auto theft – along with aggravated assault, residential burglary, robbery of an individual and more.

Stay Safe, Buckeyes: Safety Enhancements

Safety is top of mind as we begin another academic year. Ohio State is committed to supporting a safe and inclusive campus. Our team from the Department of Public Safety includes a police division, non-sworn security officers, an emergency dispatch center and many layers of security technology. We also have important partnerships with local law enforcement agencies like the Columbus Division of Police which help us extend safety resources into off-campus neighborhoods.

Coffee with a Cop

The Ohio State University Police Division is here to help. Please stop by and say hello when our officers hand out free coffee in the Ohio Union Great Hall, August 22 through August 26.

Our goal is to interact with the campus community, hear safety concerns and answer questions. Officers will be handing out coffee and chatting with campus community members Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Tuesday and Thursday, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. (Aug 22-Aug. 26).

In the News: Community Crime Map

10TV published a story on Ohio State's Community Crime Map, which was initially launched in March 2022.

The Community Crime Map consists of statistics from the Columbus Division of Police (CPD) and shows off-campus crime reports. Ohio State has preprogrammed the map to a one-mile radius to include the crime reports from the most recent 7-day period. The default crime categories are pre-determined by Lexis Nexis. In the News: Safety Top of Mind During Move-in

ABC6 and Fox 28 was on campus as students began moving into residence halls. The media outlet noted that safety was top-of-mind for parents and students.

Ohio State public safety director Monica Moll cited extra patrols, lights, cameras and a Community Crime Map among the many safety resources available.
