The Task Force on Community Safety and Well-Being has implemented some immediate, short-term recommendations including increased Community Crime Patrols, improved lighting, and expanded discounted ridesharing hours as part of Lyft Ride Smart at Ohio State.

In the News: NBC4 Features Safety Spotlight
This week, The Ohio State University Police Division released a 10-part video series called the Safety Spotlight. It's a new outreach method as police try to connect with the campus community despite remote working and learning limiting in-person interactions.
OSUPD Detective Cassandra Shaffer told NBC4 the videos have been popular accross campus: “Everybody from nurses in the medical center to students throughout campus have reached out to me, excited about the fact that we’re still trying to do things."
Updated Public Safety Resources Webpage
Welcome back, Buckeyes. Ohio State's Department of Public Safety recognizes that safety has many different meanings and may include someone's physical security, their overall well-being, having a sense of belonging and more. With that in mind, we are unveiling an updated and more comprehensive safety resources webpage that includes apps, classes and other tools from across the university and nearby neighborhoods.
Expanded Hours for Lyft Ride Smart
Effective Thursday (1/14), Lyft Ride Smart at Ohio State is expanding its hours of operation, offering eligible students four additional hours to utilize discounted rides. Service now runs from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. inside the university designated service area. These changes support recommendations from the Community Safety and Well-Being Task Force.
OSUPD Bike Training Fosters Community Interaction
November 2020 marks a special milestone for Officer Tom Schneider, celebrating his 20-year anniversary with The Ohio State University Police Division. With two decades of law enforcement under his belt, he was in search of a new challenge. After weighing his options, he decided to enroll in the OSUPD bike training program.
“This gave me an opportunity to do something exciting and new,” Officer Schneider said. “I wanted to test myself and see a different part of policing.”

The safety of the campus community is The Ohio State University’s top priority. Buckeye Alerts are one important tool to enhance the safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors.
The alerts, issued by the Department of Public Safety, let community members know when it has been determined that they need to take immediate action to remain safe.
In the News: Ohio State Establishes University Task Force on Community Safety and Well-Being
Kristina M. Johnson, president of The Ohio State University, announced today the establishment of a task force to review safety issues on campus and in neighborhoods near the university -- and to identify, implement and advocate for additional approaches that address violence, crime, and high-risk activities and behaviors.
In the News: OSU's R.A.D. program teaches women self-defense
WBNS-TV attended The Ohio State University Police Division's Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) program Tuesday evening. The program teaches women realistic self-defense tactics and techniques.
"We don't need anyone's permission to defend ourselves," Det. Cassandra Shaffer, R.A.D. instructor, told the news outlet. "This class helps women flip that switch when necessary to defend themselves in various situations in life."
Tips to Avoid Scams
As the holiday season approaches, the likelihood of scams increases. Take extra precautions and be leery of phone calls, emails or other communications that seem strange. International students can also be the target of scams. Scams can happen at any time and to anyone. We ask all students, faculty and staff to report suspicious behavior to OSUPD by calling 614-292-2121.
