In the News: Increased surveillance helps solve campus crimes

The Lantern recently wrote about how campus surveillance cameras are a helpful tool in deterring and investigating crime.

As reported by the outlet, with the help of security cameras in Scott House, the University Police division identified and soon after arrested the man who broke into the residence hall.

OSUPD Annual Awards

The Ohio State University Police Division recognized several officers and members of the community with its 2022 Annual Award ceremony on Friday, March 10, 2023.

“This is a celebration for us to recognize great quality performance from our officers,” Deputy Chief Eric Whiteside said.

In the News: Ohio State supports off-campus safety walk before spring break

Ohio State News headed door-to-door with Ohio State University Police Division officers, Columbus Police, the university's Office of Student Life Willie J. Young and Sr. Off-Campus and Commuter Student Engagement department for a neighborhood safety walk. The safety team made their way through the University District in an effort to provide residents with helpful safety tips and information to help secure their homes while they're away on spring break. 

Secure Your Valuables Before Traveling for Spring Break

Before you travel for spring break, be sure to take items of value home, including money, credit cards and ID’s. Record serial numbers of your devices. Lock all doors and windows. Students can obtain free safety devices for their homes, including window and door alarms as well as light timers. Disconnect electrical extensions. If something is missing when you return, alert the police immediately.

In the News: New K9 Officer

The Lantern published a story on Ty, OSUPD's newest K9 Officer. The 2-year-old German shepherd from France joins a team of dogs that perform sweeps of Ohio Stadium and other event venues.

"A huge component of why we have dogs on campus is for homeland security," Officer Kyle Yeager told The Lantern. "Dogs have come to the forefront of for keeping large events safe."

OSUPD Welcomes Two New Officers with Pinning Ceremony

The Ohio State University Police Division (OSUPD) welcomed two new sworn officers to the force with its pinning ceremony on February 17, 2023. Officers Nobin Rahut and Kevin Krasa, both Ohio State grads, received their OSUPD badge.

Rahut and Krasa are the last of 11 total officers hired by OSUPD in 2022. The department still has a handful of vacancies as it pushes toward staffing up to its full authorized strength of 70 sworn police officers, a sharp increase from years past.

Meet OSUPD's Newest K9

As The Ohio State University Police Division welcomes its newest K9, Ty, officers continue weekly training with their four-legged partners. The four K9s that make up OSUPD's K9 unit are all trained in explosives and patrol. Watch as they sweep the seventh floor of the Blackwell Hotel during a training exercise.

In the News: When does weather warrant canceling in-person classes?

Ohio State’s Columbus campus has cancelled classes just 19 times since 1978, as the threshold for a class cancellation on a college campus is far higher than that of K-12. When considering whether to cancel in-person classes due to severe weather, information is gathered, and a recommendation is brought forward by the executive vice president and provost. Ohio State’s Emergency Management and Fire Prevention director, Robert Armstrong, works with units throughout the university to assess road conditions, scheduled events, weather impacts, and more.
