The Ohio State University Department of Public Safety is reminding students, faculty and staff to stay safe when traveling around campus by following the rules of the road.
“With an increase in e-bikes and e-scooters, exercising caution is more important than ever,” said Monica Moll, associate vice president of public safety. "So, whether you drive, walk, bike or ride a scooter to class or work, do it safely. We all Share the Road and the responsibility.”
As the days get shorter and evenings get darker earlier, safety officials are reminding Buckeyes to avoid distractions and be on alert. Pedestrians should use marked crosswalks and sidewalks and wait for the cross sign at signalized intersections. Remove earbuds, look up from phones and be mindful around construction zones.
Bicyclists and scooter riders should ride with traffic in the roadway, not on sidewalks or in crosswalks. Riders should dismount and walk through spaces like the Oval and crosswalks. Officials advise riders to wear bright and reflective clothing, dress to be seen and follow the rules of the road. Additional rules and tips include:
- Wear a helmet.
- Maintain a three-foot minimum distance from pedestrians.
- Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
- Watch the road for uneven surfaces and debris.
- Be wary of puddles and leaves that may hide potholes.
- Dress to be seen, use lights and reflective clothing/gear at night.
- Share the Road and never ride against traffic.
- Eliminate distractions. Do not text while riding!
Motorists should keep an eye out for pedestrians, cyclists and scooter riders. Do not text and drive.
Earlier this year, The Ohio State University Police Division released a series of traffic safety videos on social media, including pedestrian, bicycle and scooter safety.
