Your Safety is a Top Priority

The official start of spring is a little more than one month away and as the weather warms up, police are asking everyone to look out for their fellow Buckeyes. When traveling on campus, follow these safety tips:

  • Keep your eyes up and your earbuds out. Eliminate distractions.
  • Use crosswalks and obey traffic laws.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and walk with a friend or coworker when possible.
  • Use ridesharing or public transportation to avoid walking alone.

Ridesharing is a common mode of transportation and a good alternative to walking alone, especially at night. On the latest episode of The City of Ohio State podcast, The Ohio State University Police Division (OSUPD) discussed how to book and use Lyft Ride Smart at Ohio State and other rideshares safely. Plus, learn about one Ohio State program called CABS On-Demand that offers free rides after 9 p.m.

“Your safety is our top priority, and we all play a part in promoting a safe campus environment when traveling to class and work,” said OSUPD chief Kimberly Spears-McNatt.

Additional safety tips include:

  • Use Rave Guardian to allow friends or family to track your location as a virtual guardian.
  • Always lock doors and windows at home.
  • Students can obtain free window and door alarms and smart plugs for light timers at 3106 Ohio Union.
  • Do not leave valuables, keys or key fobs in your vehicle.
  • Report suspicious activity, missing or stolen items to police.

On campus, call OSUPD at 614-292-2121. Off-campus, make reports to local law enforcement such as the Columbus Police by calling 614-645-4545. Always dial 9-1-1 in emergencies.
