The Ohio State University Police Division (OSUPD) is bringing hands-on journalism experience to the classroom through its ongoing work with journalism students. Each semester, the class participates in a mock crime scene exercise, which was held at the Gateway Substation for the first time this semester, giving students a firsthand look inside the space.
Each semester, OSUPD works with Nicole Kraft’s journalism class to create a simulated crime scene that challenges students to observe evidence, ask questions and apply reporting skills to a developing investigation. The exercise gives students an opportunity to experience complexities of crime scene reporting while learning about the work of law enforcement.
“We’re excited to welcome students into the Gateway Substation and show them how OSUPD is building a presence on 11th Avenue,” said OSUPD Lt. Bruce Allen. “Opportunities like this allow us to connect with the campus community, open our doors and help students get to know the people and resources available to them.”
