Name? Rank?
Nicholas Jellison, patrol officer
How long have you been with OSUPD?
I have been with OSUPD for 4 years.
Where are you from and how does that help shape who you are today?
I am from a small town in the northwest portion of the state, Van Wert, Ohio. Being from a small town, I come from a close-knit community where support from your friends, family, and neighbors is a common occurrence. Growing up in a small town and being raised in such a way that support from strangers is common, I developed a perspective where my first instinct is to offer help to those in need regardless of their differences.
What inspired you to become an OSUPD officer?
I was inspired to join OSUPD because of the culture of acceptance and support as well as the opportunity to actively see the impact I have on the community I serve. I was born with a deformity on my left hand and have lived with a limb difference my whole life. Prior to joining OSUPD, I was unsure of my ability to become a police officer due to my limb difference. From the very beginning of my career at Ohio State, I have been met with nothing but acceptance and support through accommodations that allow me to succeed in a career that I have always dreamed of. Having been provided the opportunity to serve the campus community, I have developed close relationships with fellow Buckeyes and have witnessed the impact of my service, whereas this is much less visible within larger jurisdictions and communities.
What’s unique about policing at Ohio State?
Policing at Ohio State is unique because of the diverse and ever-changing population we serve on campus. The department itself reflects the diversity of the community we serve, so we have a unique opportunity to work with and serve people from all aspects of life. Policing here is also unique because we develop close connections with students, faculty, staff, and campus organizations which gives us the ability to effectively communicate and respond to the needs and expectations of the community in real time.
Why do you serve?
My dedication to service is largely due to the guidance and support I have received and continue to receive from my parents, mentors, and my faith. I was raised on a foundation of a servant leadership philosophy, in which I strive to serve rather than command. I see service as an opportunity to be a leader in the community not only by protecting and assisting with public safety issues, but also by exemplifying honesty, integrity, and respect both on and off duty.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
In my free time I enjoy golfing, traveling, practicing Brazilian jiu jitsu, and spending time with my family. On occasion when my schedule permits, I also enjoy attending concerts and athletic events on campus.
What’s your favorite thing about being a Buckeye?
My favorite thing about being a Buckeye is the seemingly endless number of opportunities for growth both within my career and in life. My mentors, colleagues, and all fellow buckeyes adhere to a tradition of excellence in all that they do, which inspires me to follow that commitment while serving the Buckeye community and seek growth in all aspects of life.
