Cassi Shaffer, Detective
How long have you been with OSUPD?
17 years
Where are you from and how does that help shape who you are today?
I was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, and grew up in poverty. That experience taught me the values of empathy and perseverance, but I didn’t yet understand what opportunity looked like—or how to pursue it.
Joining the military changed that. It opened my eyes not only to the possibilities for personal success but also to the struggles others face and the difference I could make in their lives.
Over the years, I’ve lived in many places, but when I moved to Columbus in 2000, something clicked. For the first time, I found a community that felt like home—a place filled with opportunity, where I could grow and contribute.
What inspired you to become an OSUPD officer?
My path to a career in law enforcement was anything but traditional. After leaving the military, I became an electrician and worked in the trade for several years. During that time, there were a few key moments when I just happened to be in the right place at the right time and was able to step in and help others in meaningful ways.
Those experiences stayed with me. Looking back, I realize that’s when the seed was planted. They sparked something in me, a sense of purpose that went beyond my day-to-day work. Eventually, that sense of calling led me to where I am today.
What’s unique about policing at Ohio State?
Ohio State is a truly unique place. From its world-class facilities and dedicated people to the wide range of events on campus, it offers experiences you won’t find anywhere else. Over the years, I’ve witnessed everything from presidential visits to BuckeyeThon, and each year brings something new and unexpected.
Initially, university law enforcement wasn’t my primary goal. But during a time when getting hired by a department was challenging, OSUPD gave me the opportunity to pursue my passion. Since then, I’ve experienced things I never imagined, moments that have shaped me both professionally and personally.
The experiences I’ve had here have helped me grow into the person I am today. I’m grateful for the path that brought me here and I wouldn’t change a thing.
Why do you serve?
I’m in a unique position where I’ve had the opportunity to build strong friendships and working relationships with people across the university, throughout Columbus, and even around the country.
What makes this work so meaningful is the people I serve alongside. Whether sworn officers or civilian staff, we’re all here for the same reason: to keep this community safe.
I deeply appreciate the dedication of those around me, and I truly couldn’t imagine doing this work with anyone else.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I am an amateur wood worker, love to bike, garden, the outdoors, and travel.
What’s your favorite thing about being a Buckeye?
The people I work directly with, the community we serve, and the mission of the university, I am very proud to be a Buckeye.
