New Law Makes Package Theft a Felony in Ohio

A new law has taken effect classifying stealing packages as a felony of the fifth degree. Ohio Revised Code 2913.021 means harsher penalties for offenders who steal mail, packages, or other deliveries from porches, mailrooms, or loading docks.

“This new law empowers us to pursue stronger charges against those who target delivery zones, especially those frequently hit on campus,” said The Ohio State University Police Division (OSUPD) Deputy Chief Alan Horujko. “It’s a step forward in protecting residents and holding offenders accountable, but we need students to do their part too.”

OSUPD urges students on and off campus to use the following tips to lessen their chances of falling victim to package theft:

  • Use reputable online retailers that follow campus package procedures (Amazon, FedEx, USPS). These groups have access to the package delivery areas or use a central delivery hub.
  • If you’re not using a centralized delivery location, be cognizant of your delivery time and arrange to pick up your package immediately.
  • Avoid using third party delivery services for packages who do not work with residence hall staff and their policies.
  • Report all thefts, even if you’ve received a refund or replacement. Every report helps OSUPD identify patterns and target problem areas.
