Officer Peter Tiefenthaeler
How long have you been with OSUPD?
I have been with OSUPD since June of 2021.
Where are from and how does that help shape who you are today?
I grew up in North Ridgeville, Ohio, a smaller city on the west side of Cleveland. Being raised in a small town taught me to be self-reliant and resourceful. My parents instilled a strong work ethic in me at a young age. They taught me to be accountable for my actions and to treat others with respect.
What inspired you to become an OSUPD officer?
I graduated from Ohio State in 2005 and when I first realized I wanted to pursue a career in law enforcement, Ohio State was one of my first choices because I understand what it means to be a student here and appreciate all the opportunities OSUPD offers. I am also a big Ohio State football fan, and working on campus for sporting and special events is a big perk.
What's unique about policing at Ohio State?
Ohio State offers a unique opportunity: it is like policing in a city within a major city. With over 60,000 students and being in Columbus, you can expect a variety of crimes and calls for service. Every day is different, bringing new challenges and opportunities for growth.Every fall we get an influx of new students, many of them are new to living in a big city. Being part of the community engagement team allows me to connect with them and provide safety tips about living on their own.
Why do you serve?
I spent more than 12 years in the mental health field before becoming an OSUPD officer. Helping others has always been a part of who I am. I also enjoy being active and out in the community, which policing at Ohio State allows and encourages. I am part of the bike patrol team, which allows me to ride a bike (weather permitting) while on patrol, creating fewer barriers between students and me and enabling open communication and discussion.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two daughters. We enjoy hiking and traveling together. I also play golf and enjoy working out.
What's your favorite thing about being a Buckeye?
My favorite thing about being a Buckeye is the idea of paying it forward, which entails lifting others up and making a positive impact. Former Ohio State football coach Woody Hayes often shared this sentiment.
