Name? Rank?
Nana Amoako, Patrol Officer
How long have you been with OSUPD?
I have been with OSUPD since December 2020.
Where are you from and how does that help shape who you are today?
I am originally from Ghana, West Africa. My upbringing and high school helped shape who I am today. I obtained my high school diploma at Accra Academy (Bleoo) and 3 years of college classes at the University of Ghana before relocating to The United States. I have seen and lived on both sides of the world, and it has taught me to be humble and appreciative of life, to treat everybody equally, and most importantly to respect people. My upbringing taught me to always have a positive attitude in the face of adversity and be hard-working.
What inspired you to become an OSUPD officer?
I grew up in a Law enforcement community. My Dad retired as a Police Officer in Ghana after 40 years of service in 2012. He always instilled a sense of duty and integrity in his children. When my Military career was drawing closer to an end, after my deployment to Iraq, Jordan, and Kuwait, I started looking into career options where I could continue to give back to the community by serving and protecting. The Ohio State University Police Department felt like the perfect fit for me. I am glad I made that decision over other offers I had at the time.
What’s unique about policing at Ohio State?
We care for and provide a safe learning environment for students. We are also responsible for the safety of staff and faculty members, as well as the many people who come through the doors of The Ohio State University Hospitals each year. Policing at Ohio State offers the opportunity to engage with multiple stakeholders, people from diverse backgrounds and different socioeconomic statuses.
Why do you serve?
I serve because I believe there is more blessing in giving than receiving. I serve to protect the vulnerable, to give back to my community, and to provide a better world for my children.
What do you do in your free time?
I spend time with my wife and three children, and take Jiu-Jitsu classes.
What’s your favorite part about being a Buckeye?
The global impact, the lifelong connections, the pride, and the traditions of the Buckeye Nation makes an enjoyable experience, and fosters a sense of community and belongingness.
