Spring Break Safety Tips

Before you travel for spring break, make safety a priority. The following tips can help protect your home and your belongings while you’re away:

  • Lock all doors and windows.
  • Leave on outdoor lights and consider adding smart plugs or safety timers for indoor lights.
  • Take items of value home, including money, credit cards and IDs.
  • Record serial numbers of your devices.
  • Disconnect electrical extensions.
  • Stop mail service and have a neighbor collect packages while you are away.

Students can obtain free safety devices for their homes, including window and door alarms as well as smart plugs. If something is missing when you return, alert the police immediately. On campus, call University Police at 614-292-2121. Off-campus, call the Columbus Division of Police (CPD) at 614-645-4545. Always dial 9-1-1 in emergencies.

If you’re traveling with friends over spring break, make sure to party smart. If you go out together, stick together. Keep an eye out for your fellow Buckeyes and have a safe and fun spring break.
