Public Safety Notice - Columbus - February 14, 2022

Dear Ohio State Community Member:

You are receiving this notice because a crime has occurred that is considered to be of a concern and/or a continuing threat to the campus community.

The purpose of this message is to heighten your safety awareness by providing community members with information necessary to take appropriate precautions, enable you to take actions to help increase your safety, and to aid in the prevention of similar crimes.

The following crime occurred in:
On Campus

On 2/14/22 at approximately 8:44 p.m., a robbery was reported to university police. A male Ohio State faculty member reported that he was crossing John Herrick Drive, walking toward Neil Avenue Garage, when five or six unknown suspects exited a red sedan and struck the victim in the head and body. When the suspects fled the area, the victim could not locate his cell phone. The victim was treated at the hospital for injuries and released.

On 2/14/22 at approximately 11:20 p.m. a vehicle theft was reported to university police. A male Ohio State staff member reported that his vehicle was missing from the west stadium parking lot. While on the phone with police, the suspects came back to the lot in his vehicle, drove toward the victim and struck him before fleeing the area. There appeared to be three or four suspects inside the car. University police pursued the vehicle and apprehended one of the suspects who fled from the vehicle on foot. This suspect, a juvenile female, was charged with receiving stolen property and felonious assault. The vehicle was later recovered. The victim was treated on the scene and not transported to the hospital.

These incidents are not believed to be related.

Law enforcement officers and dispatchers are trained to interview witnesses in an effort to obtain as much information as possible, such as build, hair style, hair color, facial hair, skin tone, eye color, tattoos or identifying marks, teeth, clothing, shoes, etc. OSUPD may limit the use of race, or other descriptors, unless accompanied by a detailed description of the suspect. In an effort to share information in a timely manner, details may be limited and are based on information known or reported at the time of issuance.
