The Clery Act defines a hate crime as a criminal offense committed against a person or property which is motivated in whole or part by the offender's bias. On April 5, 2012 University Police were notified of a criminal act (case 12-1391 Graffitism) that occurred at the Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center. Painted on an outside wall was a written phrase that was racially motivated. On April 6, 2012 University Police became aware of an additional hate crime that involved racial and religious slurs spray painted on a mural on the outside of a building. This second crime occurred in a student residential area (off campus) located at 12th. Ave. and N.4th. Street in the City of Columbus.
